Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA)

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing at Becket Primary School

At Becket Primary School, we recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, happy and emotionally secure. Sometimes children may need additional support to help them understand and manage their feelings, build confidence or cope with challenges they may be experiencing.

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a school-based intervention designed to support children with their emotional wellbeing and help them develop the skills needed to achieve their full potential both in and out of the classroom.

What is an ELSA?

An Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) is a trained member of staff who works with children to support their emotional development and wellbeing.

ELSA sessions provide a safe and supportive space where children can explore feelings, develop coping strategies and build emotional resilience.

Sessions are carefully planned to meet the individual needs of each child and are delivered through activities, discussion, games, stories and creative approaches.

The team work closely with children, families and school staff to provide emotional support and promote positive wellbeing across the school.

How Are Children Referred?

Children may be referred for ELSA support by:

  • Parents or carers
  • Class teachers
  • The Inclusion Team
  • The SENCo
  • The Pastoral Lead

Referrals are considered carefully to ensure that children receive the most appropriate support for their needs.

Working Together

ELSA works most effectively when school and home work together. We believe that building strong relationships with families helps us provide the best possible support for children and ensures that they feel understood, valued and supported.

Please contact the school if you would like to discuss your child's emotional wellbeing or if you feel they may benefit from additional support.

Important to Know

ELSA is not counselling or therapy. ELSA support is intended to help children develop emotional awareness, resilience and coping skills. Where more specialist support is required, the school will work with families and external professionals to identify appropriate services.
