Becket Primary School

Spanish

Intent

At Becket Primary School we aim for a high-quality Spanish education that foster pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world and other cultures.

Through learning a foreign language they will deepen their empathy of their peers for whom English is an additional language.

They will be given opportunities to express their ideas and thoughts, by listening to Spanish speakers and providing verbal and written responses.

By the time they leave, pupils will have the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and experience aspects of life and culture in other countries.

Implementation:

Spanish is a discrete, flexible foundation subject taught in KS2, following a scheme of work developed by the Spanish Curriculum Leader, and supported through the bought resource Linguascope.

All classes will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the scheme of work and Linguascope resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in Year 3-Year 6.

Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.

Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch will be taught at all times to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language(s) they are learning.

The new Spanish curriculum was introduced to the school in 2022-2023, where all pupils in Year 3 to Year 6 learnt the Y3 curriculum so that each child develops a solid foundation of understanding of the language on which to build in preparation for KS3.  During the 2023-2024 academic year, Year 4 to Year 6 will move to the Y4 curriculum.  By 2025-2026, every child in KS2 will be working with their year group's curriculum for Spanish.

Each topic covered is supported by a Linguascope resource to develop consolidation of learning in an interactive way.

Impact

Within the Spanish curriculum, the children will develop a range of vocabulary and during subsequent years this vocabulary will be built upon, revisited and used within a wider range of conversational and written contexts.

All children are catered for within our Spanish lessons for example SEN children may be given less vocabulary to learn or additional support from adults within class. Extension tasks are given to those children who require additional challenge; these may include using new vocabulary in conjunction with pre-existing knowledge or independent vocabulary investigations.

By the time children leave Becket Primary School in Year 6, they will be confident in speaking basic Spanish in conversation and have an enthusiasm to learn more about languages as they move into Key Stage 3.
