Becket Primary School

French

Intent

At Becket Primary School we aim for a high-quality French education that foster pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world and other cultures.

Through learning a foreign language they will deepen their empathy of their peers for whom English is an additional language.

They will be given opportunities to express their ideas and thoughts, by listening to French speakers and providing verbal and written responses.

By the time they leave, pupils will have the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and experience aspects of life and culture in other countries.

Implementation:

French is a discrete, flexible foundation subject taught in KS2, following the Language Angels scheme of work.

All classes will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in Year 3-Year 6.

Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language.

Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch will be taught at all times to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language(s) they are learning.

Language Angels are categorised by ‘Teaching Type’ to make it easier for teachers to choose units that will offer the appropriate level of challenge and stretch for the classes they are teaching.

Early Language units are entry level units and are most appropriate for Year 3 pupils or pupils with little or no previous foreign language learning.

Intermediate units increase the level of challenge by increasing the amount and complexity (including foreign language grammar concepts) of the foreign language presented to pupils. Intermediate units are suitable for Year 4-5 pupils or pupils with embedded basic knowledge of the foreign language.

Progressive and Creative Curriculum units are the most challenging units and are suitable for Year 6 pupils or pupils with a good understanding of the basics of the language they are learning.

Early Language Units (entry level) and Core Vocabulary lessons are designed to run for approximately 30 minutes. Intermediate, Progressive and Creative Curriculum units are designed to run for approximately 45 minutes.

Impact

Within the French curriculum, the children will develop a range of vocabulary and during subsequent years this vocabulary will be built upon and used within a wider range of conversational and written contexts. All children are catered for within our French lessons for example SEN children may be given less vocabulary to learn or additional support from adults within class. Extension tasks are given to those children who require additional challenge; these may include using new vocabulary in conjunction with pre-existing knowledge or independent vocabulary investigations.

By the time children leave Becket Primary School in Year 6, they will be confident in speaking basic French in conversation and have an enthusiasm to learn more about languages as they move into Key Stage 3.
