Medical Needs
Our Commitment
At Becket Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is welcomed, valued and supported to achieve their full potential. We recognise that some pupils may experience medical conditions that affect their health, wellbeing, attendance or access to learning, and we are dedicated to providing the support they need to thrive.
We work closely with families, healthcare professionals and external agencies to understand each child's individual needs and to put appropriate support, adjustments and care in place. Our aim is to remove barriers, promote inclusion and ensure that pupils with medical conditions can participate fully in all aspects of school life, including learning, educational visits, clubs, sport and enrichment opportunities.
We believe that every child has the right to feel safe, included and successful. Through positive relationships, effective communication and a personalised approach, we strive to ensure that pupils with medical needs can attend, belong and succeed at Becket Primary School.
Supporting Pupils with Medical Needs
At Becket Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils with medical conditions can access education, participate fully in school life and achieve their full potential. We recognise that medical needs can affect children in different ways and that some pupils may require additional support to enable them to learn, attend school regularly and take part in wider opportunities.
We work closely with pupils, parents, healthcare professionals and external agencies to ensure that support is tailored to each child's individual needs. Our aim is to help every child remain healthy, safe, included and able to participate fully in all aspects of school life, including educational visits, PE, clubs and enrichment activities.
Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)
Some pupils with medical conditions require an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP). An IHP helps us understand a child's medical needs and ensures that staff know what support is required throughout the school day.
Healthcare Plans are developed in partnership with:
- Parents and carers
- Healthcare professionals
- School staff
- The pupil, where appropriate
Healthcare Plans may include information about:
- Medical conditions and symptoms
- Medication requirements
- Emergency procedures
- Dietary requirements
- Support for learning, wellbeing and participation
- Arrangements for school visits and activities
- Staff training requirements
Plans are reviewed regularly and updated whenever a child's needs change.
Medication in School
Where it would be detrimental to a child's health or attendance not to do so, trained staff can support pupils with prescribed and, in some circumstances, non-prescription medication.
To ensure the safety of all pupils:
- Written parental consent is required
- Medicines must be clearly labelled and in date
- Medicines are stored securely
- Records are kept of medication administered
- Staff receive appropriate training where required
We also maintain emergency procedures for pupils with specific medical conditions, including asthma, allergies and anaphylaxis.
Attendance and Medical Needs
We understand that some children may experience periods of absence due to physical health conditions, injuries, hospital treatment, mental health needs or anxiety-related difficulties.
Where medical needs affect attendance, we will work closely with families to:
- Maintain contact with school
- Support learning during periods of absence
- Liaise with healthcare professionals
- Develop reintegration plans where appropriate
- Identify and remove barriers to attendance
- Ensure pupils remain connected to school life and their peers
Our approach is based on partnership, understanding and inclusion. We recognise that every situation is different and support will always be tailored to the needs of the individual child.
Working with Health Professionals
Supporting children with medical needs is a shared responsibility. We work closely with a range of professionals to ensure children receive the support they need.
These may include:
- School Nursing Team
- GPs and Consultants
- Paediatricians
- Occupational Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Mental Health Services
- Local Authority Services
- SEND and Education Professionals
By working together, we aim to provide a coordinated approach that supports both educational progress and wellbeing.
Supporting Inclusion and Participation
We are committed to removing barriers so that pupils with medical conditions can access the same opportunities as their peers wherever possible. This may include:
- Reasonable adjustments within the classroom
- Adaptive teaching approaches
- Access to rest breaks or quiet spaces
- Additional adult support where needed
- Individual risk assessments
- Adaptations for educational visits and residential experiences
- Flexible reintegration following illness or hospitalisation [
We believe that medical needs should never prevent a child from feeling included, valued or successful.
