Becket Primary School

Character Curriculum

Intent

At Becket Primary School, our intent is to nurture well-rounded, resilient, and confident learners through the implementation of a whole-school Character Curriculum in partnership with Commando Joe’s. This progressive programme, spanning from Early Years to Year 6, is designed to develop essential life skills that follow the RESPECT framework.

By embedding character education into our daily practice, we aim to empower pupils to make positive choices, approach challenges with confidence, and prepare for the next stage of their educational journey.

Implementation

Our Character Curriculum is delivered through structured activities and challenges that promote personal development. Staff across the school are engaged in ongoing training to ensure consistent and effective delivery. Pupils participate in team-based tasks, leadership opportunities, and adventurous experiences that push them beyond their comfort zones. These activities are carefully planned to be age-appropriate and progressively build on prior learning and experiences.

Impact

The impact of our Character Curriculum is evident in the increased confidence, independence, and resilience of our pupils. Children are more willing to take risks in their learning, collaborate effectively, and demonstrate leadership. Staff track pupil development using the Commando Joe’s RESPECT framework, with progress assessed termly via the Commando Joe portal. This enables us to monitor growth in key character areas and tailor support where needed. Feedback from pupils, staff, and families highlights the positive influence of the programme on behaviour, well-being, and readiness for future challenges.
